Hi! 👋 My name is Panagiotis (short Panos). Since 1992, I’ve been working on R&D projects related to digital spaces, smart and intelligent cities, and innovation ecosystems.

I hold a Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a PhD in Urban and Spatial Planning, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

I’m working in the Information Technologies Institute (ITI/ CERTH) and teaching at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

My current smart city projects, IRIS and POCITYF, bring together cities, industry and citizens to demonstrate solutions and business models that can be scaled up and replicated, and that lead to measurable benefits in energy and resource efficiency, new markets and new jobs. The projects are funded by the European Commission through the Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

I teach the “Digital Cities – Intelligent Cities” and “Digital Cities: Applications Design & Development” courses in School of Architecture. Moreover, I teach the “Social Media Applications”, “Web Journalism”, “Human-Computer Interaction” and “Digital Media Authoring” courses in the School of Journalism and Mass Media Studies.

My research focuses on the Design and Development of Smart/Intelligent Cities, Innovation Ecosystems, Web and Mobile Technologies for New Media, Open Data, and Civic Media. My PhD thesis is titled: “Intelligent Cities: Technologies, Architectures and Governance of the Digital Space”.

I post news related to my research interests in the URENIO website and in my Twitter account.
